SAFEHOME, the only domestic violence agency in Johnson County, Kansas, seeks an energetic and enthusiastic full-time Director of Philanthropy to head up the agency’s fundraising efforts, with particular emphasis on major gift development and special events sponsorship. 

The Director of Philanthropy reports directly to the President/CEO and is a member of the agency’s Leadership Team.  The Director of Philanthropy oversees the agency’s fundraising program and works closely with the President/CEO to cultivate donors and increase major gifts income.

The Director of Philanthropy devotes significant energy and time to building relationships with donors and helping them fulfill their philanthropic interests and passions. The position oversees a staff that includes a Marketing Director, Donor Relations Manager, and Volunteer/Community Relations Manager.  This position offers a unique opportunity for an ambitious and passionate person to lead the development program to a new level of success.

Founded in 1980, SAFEHOME is proud of its 37-year history as a provider of domestic violence shelter and services to Johnson County, Miami County, and the Kansas City metro area.  A $3.5 million budget supports services including shelter, counseling, advocacy, court and legal assistance, transitional housing, economic advocacy, and education/prevention.  SAFEHOME staff enjoy a flexible and collaborative work environment.

Responsibilities:

The Director of Philanthropy will develop and implement an annual fundraising plan as part of the agency’s overall strategic plan, including specific goals for major gifts, annual support, special events, and grants. The Director of Philanthropy will manage all aspects of SAFEHOME’s development program, including:

Major Gifts:  Create and carry out strategies to increase unrestricted income, particularly through individual gifts. Secure meetings with major gift donors and prospects and engage them in face-to-face solicitations. Prepare and guide the President/CEO and Board members to build donor relationships and solicit major gifts.

Special Events Sponsorship:  With the assistance of the agency’s Sponsorship Committee, secure corporate sponsorship and underwriting of the agency’s annual special events, including the gala and golf tournament.

Annual Giving Program:  Work with staff to strengthen and expand those fundraising activities that stimulate regular giving, including mail appeals, print newsletters, e-newsletter, on-line giving and special solicitations.  Oversee the agency’s Benevon cultivation events, including monthly tours and annual community luncheon.

Grants:  Cultivate relationships with foundations and work with program staff to develop grant applications.

Administration: Work with the Donor Relations Manager to:
- Ensure timely gift recording and donor acknowledgement in the eTapestry donor database, including individual giving histories, profiles, interactions, etc.
- Keep CEO informed of trends and key donor information.
- Report to the Board of Directors on development efforts.
- Serve as liaison with the Development Committee of the Board of Directors

Planned giving: Expand membership in the agency’s planned giving program. Market planned giving opportunities to supporters.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have at least three years of proven experience in a senior development position, preferably in a non-profit setting. Knowledge of the Johnson County philanthropic and business community is highly desirable.  Must have an outstanding ability to build relationships with a diverse group of people and successfully meet personally with donors and prospective donors.  Must possess demonstrated leadership skills, as well as excellent oral and written communication skills. Experience with government and private grant funding is desirable.

Compensation:

Salary range is $70,000 – $80,000, based on experience. Benefits include generous vacation, personal and sick leave; medical, dental, vision, life, and long-term disability insurance; and 403(b) plan. Flexible, supportive, family-friendly environment.
